Crack cocaine addiction: Signs & health

What are the symptoms of crack cocaine addiction?

Crack cocaine is a powerful illicit drug that can be very harmful to mental and physical health. Smoking crack cocaine produces a short-term high that can feel euphoric and users may feel more alert, have more energy and confidence and a sense of invincibility. The high is followed soon after by a comedown which can induce feelings of depression, anxiety and anger. When someone is addicted to crack cocaine, they may suffer with or exhibit:

  • Erratic behaviour
  • Mood swings
  • Rapid breathing
  • Respiratory problems from smoking
  • Chest pain and breathing difficulties from ‘crack lung’
  • Unkempt appearance
  • Hallucinations
  • Paranoia
  • Delusions
  • Crawling sensations under the skin
  • Insomnia
  • Liver damage
  • Stroke

When crack is mixed with alcohol or other substances, the risk of overdose and danger to life can significantly increase.

It’s important for people addicted to crack cocaine to seek professional help to prevent health worsening. Contact us online confidentially to find out about our programme and routes into treatment.

What is crack cocaine and why is it addictive?

Crack cocaine is a powerful and highly addictive stimulant drug that is more concentrated and potent than powdered cocaine. Crack cocaine is processed into solids that look like crystals or rocks which is usually smoked through a pipe and results in an immediate high. The euphoric effects of crack cocaine are short-lived (minutes), meaning that users often crave more of the drug again and again.

The intense high experienced after smoking crack cocaine can quicky lead to an unmanageable cycle of repeated cravings and using which can manifest into addiction. At this stage, the individual becomes fixated on seeking the next high and it becomes the focus of their life, often to the detriment of their responsibilities.

Medically managed detox & therapeutic programme at Broadway Lodge

A stay at Broadway Lodge begins in our smaller 10-bed Gordon Beard Unit, right next of our main house. During this settling in period, there are therapeutic sessions each day led by a counsellor, such as group therapy and educational and interactive workshops, as well as auricular acupuncture is available which promotes healing in different parts of the body and aids relaxation. It’s also where clients who require a detox will complete this part of their treatment, being supported and cared for by our 24/7 medical team.

Crack cocaine alone doesn’t require a medically managed detox but our medical team are available around the clock to help clients to manage any symptoms of suddenly stopping. A detox may be required for individuals who have been using crack alongside other substances such as heroin or alcohol. If you’d like to find out more about detoxing at Broadway Lodge, have a look at our detox page here.

Once ready, clients move into the main house to join up to 30 peers for the main therapeutic programme where change really starts to happen. Clients partake in a comprehensive, structured programme of sessions every day led by qualified counsellors and therapists. Through group-based work, individual work, counselling, ex-resident shares, fellowship meetings, holistic treatments and spiritual/mindfulness classes, clients get to understand not only their addiction, but identify the deep rooted issues that may have kept them stuck in addiction as well as unhealthy attitudes, thought patterns and behaviours.

We aim for clients to leave treatment with improved mental and emotional wellbeing along with increased self-esteem, self-compassion, confidence and positivity with the tools to sustain their recovery. You can read more about our full therapeutic programme here.

Following the residential stay at Broadway Lodge, both in-person and online aftercare is available each week for an unlimited time to help former clients to stay on track with recovery, get support for any challenges and keep a connection with Broadway Lodge.
