How Long Does a Detox Take?

Detoxification, or “detox,” is an important first step on the journey to recovery for people who are physically dependent to alcohol or certain drugs. It’s the process of clearing harmful substances from the body after prolonged use, helping to create a foundation for healing. But how long does detox take? The truth is, it varies from person to person. The timeline can differ depending on things like the substance being used and any medication prescribed to alleviate symptoms of withdrawal, the individual’s physical personal health and the environment where detox takes place.

At Broadway Lodge we know detox can be challenging, both physically and mentally, but understanding the process and its complexities can help you (and your loved ones) better prepare for the road ahead.

Why does detox length vary?

No two detox journeys are alike. The duration and intensity of a detox can depend on a range of factors, such as:

  • Type of substance: Each substance has its own withdrawal timeline. For example, alcohol withdrawal symptoms might peak within 1-3 days, while benzodiazepine detox can stretch over many weeks.
  • Amount and duration of use: Individuals with a long history of high-dose substance use may experience more prolonged detox periods compared to those with a shorter history.
  • Physical health: A person’s overall health, including factors like liver function and immune system strength, can impact the speed of detoxification.
  • Environment: Detoxing at home versus in a medical detox unit may affect the timeline and outcome. Under medical supervision, symptoms can be managed more effectively, reducing risk and complications as well as the detox duration.

Each individual responds to detox differently, even when using the same substance in similar quantities. Take benzodiazepines, for example. One person may transition through the process in two weeks, while another might take six weeks or more. This is due to physical tolerance, delayed symptoms and how the body handles reduction levels of the drug.

Home vs. clinical detox

Detoxing at home can feel like a convenient option, but it often comes with risks and unpredictability. Substances like alcohol and benzodiazepines can cause serious withdrawal symptoms, including seizures, without proper medical support. That’s why a professional detox unit offers a safer, more supportive environment to help you through this important first step of recovery.

At Broadway Lodge, we offer a medically managed detox programme that couples 24/7 medical supervision with expert care. Our team ensures that any withdrawals are handled as smoothly as possible, safeguarding both physical and emotional health.

A closer look at the timeline of detox for major substances

1. Alcohol

For most individuals, alcohol detox begins 6-12 hours after the last drink, with symptoms peaking between 24-72 hours. These symptoms can range from mild tremors to more severe conditions like delirium tremens, which can be life-threatening. The detox process generally resolves within 5-7 days, though psychological cravings may persist for longer.

2. Benzodiazepines

Benzodiazepine detox can be less predictable. Withdrawal symptoms, which can include anxiety, dizziness, restlessness, insomnia and in more severe cases, seizures, may not emerge until several days to weeks after stopping. The reduction process is carefully tapered under supervision, and detox can last anywhere from two weeks to two months, or longer in some severe cases.

3. Opiates (e.g. heroin, prescription painkillers)

Opiate withdrawal symptoms typically start within 8-24 hours after the last use and peak within 72 hours. While the physical symptoms, such as shaking, sweating, muscle aches, diarrhoea and nausea, tend to subside after a week to 10 days, it’s not uncommon for individuals to experience longer-lasting psychological effects.

Not everyone who is addicted to a mind-altering substance requires a medically managed detox. Drugs such as cocaine, ketamine and cannabis do not pose the same level of risk when stopped compared to alcohol, benzodiazepines and opiates. However, our medical team monitor client’s health and are available around the clock to help manage any symptoms that may arise as a result of suddenly stopping the use of these substances.

The importance of therapeutic support during detox

Detox helps to manage the physical symptoms of withdrawal, but it’s just the first step in recovery. To achieve long-term success, it’s important to address the psychological and behavioural causes of addiction. Without this support, the risk of relapse after detox increases significantly.

At Broadway Lodge, we combine detox with therapeutic treatment to help you begin your recovery journey holistically. Therapy sessions during detox give you the opportunity to explore the underlying reasons for your addiction and introduce tools and strategies to support positive behaviour change.

Our multidisciplinary team provides a range of therapeutic interventions including daily group therapy, individual counselling, workshops covering a wide range of topics including relapse prevention, and auricular acupuncture to promote healing in the body and aid relaxation.

Signs you need professional support

If you or a loved one are experiencing addiction and considering detox, it’s important to watch for signs that medical help is necessary. These can include:

  • Severe withdrawal symptoms like hallucinations, seizures or confusion.
  • A history of relapse after previous detox attempts.
  • Co-occurring health conditions or a dual diagnosis, such as depression or anxiety.
  • High levels of substance dependency, requiring significant reductions.

Seeking professional assistance can make the difference between struggling alone and embarking on a safe, supported pathway to recovery.
